This book is about a young woman, Dena, living in New York City, and becoming a successful newscaster. It gives you a view of her life, and her state of denial, claiming that she is quite content, when really she is extremely unhappy. Dena is forced by her doctor to see a therapist, who attempts to look into her past, and discover what is troubling her. Dena's father was killed in World War II before she was born, and she claims that her mother was killed in a car accident. Later, she reveals that she doesn't know where her mother is, and isn't sure if she is alive or not. The book elaborates on her self-discovery journey, with some help from distant relatives down in the south. Welcome to the World Baby Girl! describes the true meaning of family, and what it really is to be happy.
Overall, this is one of my favorite books I've ever read. I've read several books by this author, and all of them only include a group of people who don't differentiate too much, as well as their views on life. However, in this book, we are introduced to a different character, who is quite unhappy, and has a completely different outlook on life. I enjoy how the author shows that she is capable of writing in a different style, and adding a character which is different from her typical suspects. I enjoy the variety, and how the characters are certain people who are forgiving, and allow you to fall back on them, even though they may be distant relatives.
